The deaths of innocent children in a tragic roof collapse at a private school in Peshawar have sparked grief and outrage across the country. On social media platform X, the slogan “Answer for the Children’s Blood” has gained traction, with users demanding accountability for those responsible and calling for measures to ensure the safety of educational institutions.
On Thursday, October 15, the roof of Al-Khair, a private school in Peshawar’s Deir Colony area, collapsed, trapping several children beneath the rubble. Rescue 1122 teams, police personnel and local residents immediately launched rescue operations, while the injured were shifted to hospitals.
At least 35 people were killed in the incident, while more than 40 others were injured.
Initial reports raised concerns about the possibility of structural weaknesses in the building. Authorities are investigating the causes of the collapse to determine what led to the tragedy.
The school owner has also been arrested. However, the exact cause of the incident and the question of legal responsibility will be established only after the investigation is completed.
Following the tragedy, the slogan “Answer for the Children’s Blood” has come to represent demands for a comprehensive investigation into the loss of young lives. Social media users are calling for legal action against those found responsible if negligence is established.
The incident has once again highlighted the need to inspect the structural integrity of educational buildings, student capacity limits, construction standards and safety arrangements to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
The incident has also raised questions about the oversight of educational institutions during the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) tenure in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
PTI governed the province for an extended period, prompting questions about successive provincial governments’ performance in overseeing the education system, regulating private school registrations, ensuring building safety and enforcing prescribed safety standards.
If the school building failed to meet the required safety standards, an important question is whether the relevant authorities had inspected the premises and taken appropriate action.
These questions should be answered through official records and transparent investigations rather than political statements alone. Establishing the facts and determining responsibility will be essential to ensuring accountability and preventing similar tragedies.
