Punjab government on Wednesday imposed a province-wide ban on pillion riding on 9th and 10th Muharram (June 25 and 26) to maintain law and order during processions and religious gatherings.
The Punjab Home Department issued a notification under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code. It said the move aims to ensure public safety and prevent any disruption of peace.
According to the notification, there is a possible security threat from miscreants, extremist groups and anti-social elements during Muharram-ul-Haram 2026. It warned such elements may try to disturb religious harmony and trigger sectarian tensions.
The department also banned carrying weapons in public places. It further prohibited slogans, signs or displays that could provoke violence or hurt religious sentiments.
The use of social media and digital platforms to spread sectarian hatred has also been barred.
The notification added that building temporary fortified structures on rooftops along procession routes is not allowed. It also restricted people from sitting or standing on rooftops of houses and shops along these routes during processions.
However, the pillion riding ban will not apply to women, children, senior citizens, journalists and law enforcement personnel in uniform.
Police have been directed to take action under Section 188 of the Pakistan Penal Code against violators.
