The Sindh government has announced the launch of a Pink Taxi Scheme for women as part of its broader electric vehicle (EV) transport initiative, Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said during a session of the Sindh Assembly.
The minister said the scheme will follow the successful rollout of the Pink Scooter Programme and will empower women by providing them with dedicated transport facilities. He added that more details about the fleet of women-only pink taxis will be announced soon.
Memon also said the government has instructed traffic police to take action against men found using pink scooters issued under the existing scheme after receiving complaints that some scooters were being used by male family members.
He said Sindh became the first province in Pakistan to introduce electric buses. Responding to criticism over the limited distribution of pink scooters, Memon noted that only 150 women held driving licences when the programme began, whereas nearly 25,000 women have now applied for licences.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to providing scooters to all eligible women, saying the initiative has significantly contributed to women’s empowerment across the province.
The minister also claimed that the Sindh Revenue Board recorded the country’s highest tax collection growth, with a 24 per cent increase compared to the Federal Board of Revenue’s 10 per cent growth.
