PM Shehbaz Sharif reviews national food stock with Minister Rana Tanveer

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, on Monday held a meeting with Federal Minister for National Food Security, Rana Tanveer Hussain, to assess the current food stock situation in the nation.

During this meeting, the PM conveyed his Eid ul Fitr greetings to the federal minister.

Rana Tanveer provided PM Shehbaz with an overview of the national food stock, assuring him that there is an adequate supply of essential food commodities throughout the country.

Additionally, the minister informed the Prime Minister about the economic advancements made in the export of food products to Gulf nations.

Inflation hits food markets

Earlier, Pakistan’s weekly inflation rose considerably, with prices of essential goods showing mixed trends across markets, according to new data. 

The Sensitive Price Indicator increased by 0.21 percent in the week ending March 18, 2026, figures released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics showed.

The index tracks the cost of 51 key items in 50 markets across 17 cities and offers a snapshot of price changes faced by households. 

Tomatoes recorded the biggest price hike during the week, climbing to nearly 25 percent.

Prices of live broiler chicken also moved up by over 7 percent, adding to pressure on kitchen budgets.

Bread, cooked daal, mustard oil and cigarettes recorded smaller increases, while energy savers also became slightly more expensive.
