Portugal star footballer Quévin Castro has died after collapsing during a pre-season friendly match while playing for fourth-division side Real Sport Clube. He was 25.
Castro collapsed during a match against Estrela de Amadora at Estádio das Seixas in Malveira. His death was later confirmed by the Lisbon Football Association and Real Sport Clube.
The club paid tribute to Castro, describing him as more than just a footballer and saying he had left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him both on and off the pitch.
The Portugal star had previously played in England for West Bromwich Albion, who expressed shock at his “untimely passing”.
The English club said Castro joined the team as a teenager in 2021 and made his first-team debut in a Carabao Cup match against Arsenal. He later made his league debut in February 2022 and spent time on loan at Burton Albion, Notts County and Gateshead.
After leaving West Bromwich Albion in 2023, Castro played for several English clubs, including York City, King’s Lynn, Chippenham, Cambridge City and Eastbourne, before returning to Portugal.
West Bromwich Albion announced that its players would wear black armbands and observe a period of applause in the 25th minute of their match against Burnley as a tribute to Castro.
Pakistani mountaineer Asma Mushtaq dies after Spantik climb
Earlier, Pakistani mountaineer Dr Asma Mushtaq died after suffering a serious medical emergency at high altitude while returning from Spantik Peak in the Karakoram mountain range.
According to the Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP), Asma had successfully reached the summit of the 7,027 metre high Spantik mountain and was reportedly in good health when she completed the climb.
However, during her return, at an altitude of around 6,400 metres, she developed a serious medical emergency.
The Alpine Club said her mountain guides immediately responded to the emergency and made every possible effort to save her despite the extremely difficult conditions at such a high altitude.
Karakoram Calling Treks also confirmed the incident. According to the organisation, Mushtaq’s mountain guide Akbar Ali, along with another guide, provided emergency assistance after her condition suddenly deteriorated.
However, despite the efforts of the guides, she could not survive.
ACP Senior Vice President Karrar Haidri expressed condolences over Mushtaq’s death and extended sympathies to her family, friends and Pakistan’s mountaineering community.
