The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) high-ups have tasked Faryal Talpur with leading preparations for the upcoming local government elections in Punjab and strengthening the party’s organisational structure across the province.
President Asif Ali Zardari has assigned his sister Faryal Talpur the responsibility of leading the party’s initial preparations for the Punjab local government elections. Following the assignment, Talpur has stepped up her political and organisational activities in the province.
The development is expected to set the stage for a political contest between Maryam Nawaz and Faryal Talpur in the upcoming Punjab local government elections. Over the past four days, Talpur has held meetings with PPP’s Central and South Punjab leadership at Zardari House in Islamabad.
She held detailed consultations with PPP Central Punjab President Raja Pervez Ashraf, General Secretary Hassan Murtaza, South Punjab President Makhdoom Ahmed Mahmood, General Secretary Natasha Dawlatana, and Abdul Qadir Shaheen. Talpur received briefings from the provincial presidents on the political situation and organisational affairs in Punjab.
According to sources, Talpur directed the party’s Central and South Punjab leadership to actively participate in the local government elections, expected to be held later this year, and to field candidates in every local government constituency across the province. Sources said the PPP is also working to bring back leaders and workers who had previously left the party. At the same time, the party has decided to approach politically influential and strong figures in every district to persuade them to join the PPP.
