Pakistan has taken another step toward launching 5G services after the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) finalised frequency allocations from the recent spectrum auction.
In a press release dated March 12, 2026, the PTA said it had concluded the assignment stage of the Next Generation Mobile Services (NGMS) / 5G spectrum auction.
The step determines the exact frequency blocks that telecom companies will use to deploy their networks.
The regulator said the allocations will allow operators to begin detailed planning for their future 5G infrastructure.
Spectrum distributed among three operators
According to the PTA statement, spectrum was distributed among three major telecom companies: Jazz, Zong and Ufone.
In the 2600 MHz band, Jazz secured 70 MHz, while Zong and Ufone received 60 MHz each.
In the 3500 MHz band, Ufone obtained the largest share with 120 MHz, while Jazz and Zong each secured 50 MHz. Another 60 MHz in this band remained unsold, the regulator said.
Officials say these frequencies will allow companies to start preparing their networks for next-generation mobile services.
Auction price crossed $500m
The regulator said the spectrum auction generated $509.6 million, which is about Rs142.6 billion, for the national exchequer.
According to the PTA figures shown in the release, Jazz acquired spectrum worth $239.38 million, while Zong purchased licences valued at $156.75 million.
Ufone secured spectrum worth $113.47 million.
Officials say the revenue will go to the government treasury, while telecom companies will now focus on technical preparations for the rollout of new services.
Next step towards 5G
With the assignment stage completed, telecom operators can move ahead with network planning and deployment.
This process includes configuring base stations, upgrading infrastructure and preparing compatible services before commercial 5G networks can be launched.
Pakistan has been preparing for the transition to 5G for several years, though an official nationwide launch date has not yet been announced.
