Fact check: Is govt planning to collect PTA phone tax in monthly installments?

pta phone tax, pta, pta tax on imported phones

Many of the social media handles have posted that the government of Pakistan is about to collect the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) phone tax in monthly installments.

The question is whether this news is even correct?

There is not even a single statement or any kind of official social media post by the authorities, including the government and the PTA itself.

According to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, the PTA has only encouraged the citizens of Pakistan to pay taxes and duties on the imported mobile phones.

The post stated that PTA phone taxes are solely collected by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

Moreover, the officials have also advised the consumers to always approve their devices via the Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS) of the PTA.

Taxpayers can visit the official website of the DIRBS, given by the PTA: dirbs.pta.gov.pk

There have been claims circulating all over the internet that the Finance Bill has been introduced to initiate the process of taking monthly installments in order to collect phone taxes.

There has been no official notification to date by the Finance Ministry, FBR, and the PTA.

As per the latest framework of the DIRBS system of the PTA, the tax on mobile phones is to be paid in full, as the taxpayers can get clearance only after they pay their mobile tax in full.

Moreover, if by any chance the government decides to introduce the monthly installment system, it would have to make amendments to the PTA/ DIRBS rules.

It is clear that the government has so far not planned any framework for collecting PTA phone tax through monthly installments.
