Yemen will observe a public holiday on Wednesday, October 14, to mark the 63rd anniversary of the October 14 Revolution, commemorating the uprising against British colonial rule in southern Yemen.

The Ministry of Civil Service and Insurance announced the holiday for public and mixed-sector employees, according to Yemen’s state news agency, Saba. A separate announcement from authorities in Sana’a also confirmed the holiday for public-sector employees.

The October 14 Revolution began in 1963 with an armed uprising against British rule in the region of Radfan, near Aden. The struggle continued for four years and culminated in the end of British rule and the independence of South Yemen on November 30, 1967.

Liberation Day is observed annually on October 14 and commemorates the beginning of the independence struggle rather than the date independence was formally achieved.

The holiday is listed among Yemen’s official public holidays under the country’s holiday legislation.
