Thailand will observe King Bhumibol Adulyadej the Great Memorial Day on Tuesday, October 13, to honour the late monarch on the anniversary of his death. The day is a national public holiday in Thailand.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who reigned from 1946 until his death in 2016, remains an influential figure in Thailand’s modern history. His 70-year reign made him one of the longest-reigning monarchs in the world.

The annual observance, officially known in Thailand as Nawamindra Maharaj Day, provides an opportunity for people to remember the late king and reflect on his legacy. The Thai government designated October 13 as an annual public holiday in 2017.

The memorial day is marked by tributes and commemorative activities honouring the former monarch. Government offices and many businesses close for the national holiday, while banks also list the date as a holiday.

King Bhumibol’s legacy remains closely associated with Thailand’s national identity, and the annual commemoration serves as a reminder of his decades on the throne.

The observance is part of Thailand’s calendar of royal memorial days, which honour members of the monarchy and significant events in the country’s history.
