The Punjab government has approved a major Rs36 billion water supply project for Rawalpindi. The project will provide more clean drinking water to residents of Rawalpindi city and cantonment areas.
A surface water treatment plant will be built at Dadocha Dam. A new water supply system will also be developed as part of the project.
Once completed, the project is expected to add 35 million gallons of clean water per day to Rawalpindi’s existing water supply. This additional water will be supplied to both the city and cantonment areas.
The project is scheduled for completion by December 2029.
According to the Rawalpindi commissioner, water from Dadocha Dam will first be treated before being supplied to residents. The main aim of the project is to improve access to clean and safe drinking water for the people of Rawalpindi.
Construction work on Dadocha Dam is currently underway under the Punjab Irrigation Department. According to officials, around 92% of the dam’s construction work has already been completed.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) will start work on the required water supply infrastructure after the completion of the Dam.
The project will include the construction of a 28-kilometre transmission line. This line will connect Dadocha Dam with Rawalpindi.
A water filtration plant will also be built to provide clean water to residents. In addition, a new distribution network will be developed to carry clean water to different areas.
These facilities will help distribute clean water across Rawalpindi city and its cantonment areas.
The Punjab government will provide Rs18 billion for the part of the project related to Rawalpindi city.
However, a decision has not yet been made about the remaining Rs18 billion required for the cantonment area.
The project is expected to be discussed at a Punjab Cabinet meeting. The federal government or the Punjab government is expected to provide the remaining funds.
