The Punjab government has expanded its health insurance scheme to cover police personnel and their families.
As per the insurance scheme launched by the government, the eligible beneficiaries can receive up to Rs1 million worth of free medical treatment each year, according to an official notification.
Under the expanded scheme, employees of the Punjab Police and their families will be eligible for treatment through hospitals included in the programme’s network.
The programme is intended to improve access to healthcare for permanent residents of Punjab.
According to the notification, 153 private hospitals across the province are currently part of the panel.
Officials quoted in reports on the programme say that more than 10 million people have benefited from the scheme, with medical treatment worth about Rs240 billion provided so far.
The provincial government says the programme is being expanded to increase access to healthcare and reduce the financial burden of medical treatment on residents.
The latest expansion gives police employees and their dependants access to the same health-insurance arrangement, according to the notification.
The new coverage comes alongside existing medical assistance available to Punjab Police personnel and their families.
Punjab Police says its welfare regulations already provide medical financial assistance to police officers and officials, including support for spouses and children.
The department’s welfare fund also provides assistance for other needs, including education, death-related support and retirement benefits.
In a separate 2025 announcement, Punjab Police said additional funds had been released to support the medical treatment of police employees and their families, including assistance for major illnesses and surgery.
Punjab’s broader health-insurance initiative has its roots in the Sehat Sahulat programme, under which the federal and Punjab governments signed an agreement in 2021 to extend universal health coverage in Punjab and Islamabad.
