The Punjab government has launched a digital monitoring system aimed at strengthening inspections and oversight of prisons across the province.
Punjab Home Secretary Ahmad Javed Qazi said the new system had been integrated with an online portal to allow officials to monitor prison inspections and review reports submitted by jails.
The system includes an Executive Monitoring Dashboard, which enables senior prison officials to access inspection reports and other information remotely.
Officials from the Directorate of Monitoring briefed senior prison officers on the use of the new digital portal during a meeting in Lahore.
According to officials, the portal contains information on prison security and compliance with laws governing jails. It also allows authorised officials to access reports submitted by individual prison administrations through a centralised online system.
The system will also monitor prisoner capacity and maintain daily records of inmates entering and leaving prisons.
Prison authorities will be required to keep information on admissions and releases up to date, officials said.
The portal will also contain individual prisoner records, including details such as age, educational qualifications and health information.
In addition, the system will track prisoners’ activities and their participation in skills development programmes.
Officials say the digital platform is intended to provide senior authorities with more timely information about prison conditions and improve monitoring of the province’s jails.
The Punjab government’s move comes as authorities seek to increase the use of digital systems in the administration and monitoring of prisons.
