The government of Punjab has taken an important step for schools across the province.
The Punjab School Education Department is preparing to increase the non-salary budget (NSB) for government schools.
According to the latest media reports, the department will be increasing the budget along with electricity, gas and other utility expenses expected to play a key role in determining future allocations.
The department has reportedly asked all districts to provide details of schools’ utility bills as part of work on a revised budget formula.
Schools have been directed to submit copies of their December 2025 utility bills, along with records of their total utility expenses over the previous 12 months.
Officials have also been instructed to ensure that the information submitted is accurate, authentic and verified.
Under the proposed formula, the department aims to take schools’ actual utility costs into account when deciding how much non-salary funding they receive.
Government schools currently receive a combined annual non-salary budget of Rs12 billion.
The department has set March 27, 2026 as the deadline for districts to submit the required information.
The proposed revision is intended to make budget allocations more reflective of the running costs faced by individual schools, particularly their spending on essential utilities.
Further details of the revised formula and the amount of any increase have not yet been provided.
