Punjab’s Excise and Taxation Department has announced a crackdown on token tax and property tax defaulters from October 1, with stricter recovery measures to be taken against those who fail to clear their outstanding dues.
According to Excise officials, vehicle owners who remain in default after September 30 will have to pay their outstanding token tax along with a 100% penalty. The department is currently allowing motorists to clear their dues under the existing payment terms until September 30, providing them with a final opportunity to avoid the additional penalty.
Officials have advised vehicle owners to pay their token tax before the deadline to avoid financial penalties and possible recovery action.
A similar deadline has been announced for property taxpayers. Officials said taxpayers can avail themselves of a 5% concession on property tax until September 30. After the deadline, the department will intensify recovery efforts against those who fail to pay their outstanding taxes.
The enforcement drive will particularly focus on commercial properties that have remained in default for several years. Officials said action, including the sealing of properties belonging to long-term commercial tax defaulters, will begin from October 1.
The Excise and Taxation Department is responsible for motor vehicle registration and taxation as well as urban immovable property tax in Punjab.
Officials said the intensified recovery campaign is aimed at improving revenue collection and helping the department achieve its Rs125 billion revenue target. Authorities are expected to take all possible measures to recover outstanding dues from defaulters.
With the September 30 deadline approaching, vehicle owners and property taxpayers with unpaid dues have been advised to settle their liabilities before the enforcement campaign begins on October 1.
