Outdoor Activities Banned in Schools Amid Rising Smog Levels

LAHORE: The Punjab Education Department has taken urgent steps in response to the growing smog levels across the province, to ensure the health and safety of students.

As per the official notification, sports and morning assemblies among other outdoor school activities will remain suspended on days affected by high smog.

The department has kicked off a public awareness campaign targetting teachers, students, and parents, focusing on preventive steps to reduce health risks from smog exposure.

Schools are encouraged to launch educational drives, about the importance of wearing masks, staying hydrated, and minimizing outdoor exposure, especially for children with pre-existing respiratory conditions like asthma.

Safety Guidlines

Air Quality Monitoring: The authorities will track Air Quality Index (AQI) readings daily and issue on time instructions to schools for children’s safety.

Classrooms: School administrators are asked to strictly follow the cleanliness rules and ensure proper ventilation with windows and doors remain closed during high smog levels.

Coordination with Health Authorities: Districts are required to appoint a designated point of contact to coordinate with local health departments in case of emergencies.

Health Monitoring: Schools must keep emergency health records for students with respiratory or heart conditions. Teachers are advised to remain vigilant for any health issues among students.

The school administration must submit reports about their compliance with these steps, including links to awareness campaigns and contact details for representatives. The measures will be effective from October 5, 2025, in schools across Punjab.
