Govt suspends three police officials over arrest of Sheema Kermani

The government of Sindh have suspended three of the police officers responsible for the arrest of the Pakistani classical dancer, actress and social activist Sheema Kermani.

The Sindh government immediately took notice of the illegal detention of the women’s rights activists outside the Karachi Press Club (KPC) on May 6.

Three of the police officers have been suspended by the government, who were present on duty while the alleged mistreatment and custody of Sheema Kermani and her fellow activists.

The women’s rights activists were arrested on May 5, while they were gathering in front of the KPC, as a press conference was about to be addressed by them, demanding a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for their march scheduled in Karachi.

The officers who were suspended include the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Saddar Nasir Afridi, the Station House Officer (SHO) Hina Mughal and Artillery Maidan SHO Nadeem Haider.

According to the media reports, the Sindh Home Minister, Zia Ul Hassan, said, “An investigation into the incident had been ordered. There is a zero-tolerance policy against abuse of powers; the dignity and rights of women would be protected at all costs.”

The women’s activists, including Sheema Kermani and other fellows, were released by the police after a brief detention on Tuesday, following the orders of Zia Ul Hassan.

In their post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Aurat March Karachi spokesperson said, “We will not back down from our politics, and we will continue to demand an NOC!”

The post further mentioned that scare tactics to suppress dissent are shameful! It said, adding that the provincial government should issue a statement explaining the reason for the detentions and for the “delay” in granting the NOC.
