Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has expressed serious concern over the severe water shortage in Karachi and has instructed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to immediately restore water supply throughout the city.
The Chief Minister also requested a comprehensive report from the relevant authorities about the causes of the water supply disruption.
He directed that repair and restoration efforts on the affected lines should proceed without delay and that the public should be regularly updated on the progress.
Syed Murad Ali Shah further highlighted the importance of implementing effective precautionary measures in the future to avoid similar incidents.
During a briefing, Water Board CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui explained that a power surge from K-Electric led to the bursting of the 72-inch Line No. 5 at the Dhabeji pumping station at three different spots.
He mentioned that due to the power outage, two pumps at the pumping station unexpectedly shut down during the night of May 20-21.
This resulted in pressure fluctuations, causing damage to the pipeline at three locations.
BRT project disrupts Karachi water supply
Additionally, ongoing work on the BRT project partially interrupted water supply from the FTM line, leading to a daily shortfall of about 48 million gallons of water in the city.
CEO Ahmed Ali Siddiqui stated that both technical issues have now been resolved successfully. He noted that it might take around 17 more hours for the city’s water supply to completely return to normal.
Given the circumstances, the Water Board administration has urged Karachi residents to conserve water until the supply is fully restored.
