Apple is expected to reveal a major upgrade to its virtual assistant, Siri, at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference on June 8, with a stronger focus on artificial intelligence.
The update is likely to bring long-awaited improvements to Siri, which has struggled to match the capabilities of newer AI-powered assistants in recent years.
Voice control hints at bigger changes
Clues about what is coming emerged from Apple’s recent preview of new accessibility features under its Apple Intelligence system. While the company has not confirmed full details, the early look suggests a shift towards more natural and flexible interactions.
One feature drawing attention is Voice Control. Although it already exists, it is expected to become far more advanced with AI support. Users may soon be able to control their devices using everyday language, rather than fixed commands.
For example, instead of remembering exact labels or menu names, users could say things like “open the guide about best restaurants” or “tap the purple folder”, and the device would understand.
This change could mark a significant step forward in how people interact with their phones and other Apple devices.
Siri may finally act more like an AI assistant
The improvements to Voice Control are also seen as a strong signal of what is planned for Siri itself.
At present, Siri is often seen as limited, especially when compared to modern AI assistants that can perform complex tasks and respond with greater context. The expected upgrade could allow Siri to better understand user intent, respond more naturally and carry out actions across apps.
Apple had earlier outlined a vision where Siri could learn from personal context, understand what is displayed on screen and take action within different apps. These features have yet to fully arrive, but recent developments suggest progress is being made.
The new capabilities are expected to roll out with a future software update, possibly iOS 27, later this year.
More details will become clear when Apple opens its developer conference on June 8. If the preview features reflect what is to come, users could soon see a more capable and useful Siri, closer to the AI assistant Apple first promised.
