Pakistani climber Sohail Sakhi was laid to rest in Hunza, Gilgit-Baltistan, with a large crowd gathering to pay tribute to him and attend his funeral prayers.
Sakhi was among the climbers who lost their lives last month during an expedition led by British-Nepali mountaineer Nirmal Purja. The team lost contact after an avalanche struck them.
At first, Sakhi could not be located. However, with the help of local volunteers, his body was eventually found at an altitude of 5,600 metres on Broad Peak, one of the highest peaks in the world, which stands at an altitude of 8,047 metres.
Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir and Abuzar found the body of the climber.
His last Instagram post was with fellow climber Mallory Geis on Broad Peak, where he announced that he was set to attempt to climb the difficult peak.
Broad Peak is the world’s 12th-highest mountain and is widely regarded as one of the most technically demanding of the world’s 8,000-metre peaks.
Sohail Sakhi was born on May 15, 1994. He spent his childhood in Aliabad, Hunza. His father was a well-known local tour guide. He went on to summit several of the world’s highest peaks — including K2 (twice, once with no-O2), Nanga Parbat (no-O2), Gasherbrum I and Gasherbrum II (no-O2), and most recently Kanchenjunga in Nepal (no-O2). Broad Peak was going to be his final 8000-meter peak in Pakistan to tick off the list.
The tragedy sent shockwaves through the global mountaineering community, with many of his colleagues paying him tributes.
