Govt plans Rs80,000 subsidy for e-bikes

The government of Pakistan is planning to provide a subsidy of Rs80,000 for e-bikes (electric two-wheelers) and Rs400,000 for electric three-wheelers as part of efforts to promote cleaner transport and encourage the use of electric vehicles.

The proposals were outlined during Question Hour in the National Assembly, where officials presented details of the government’s New Energy Vehicle Policy 2025-2030.

The proposed financial support is intended to make electric vehicles more affordable and encourage people to switch from conventional petrol-powered motorcycles and rickshaws.

However, the subsidies were presented as proposals, and the available information does not confirm when they will be implemented or how people will be able to apply.

Under the policy, the government aims to establish around 3,000 public electric vehicle charging stations across Pakistan by 2030.

In the first phase, 40 fast-charging stations are planned along selected sections of motorways and the National Highway N-5.

Officials also plan to encourage the installation of charging facilities at existing petrol stations to make charging more accessible to electric vehicle users.

The policy also aims to expand domestic production of electric vehicles and their key components, including electric motors, battery packs and chargers.

The government says promoting local manufacturing and technology transfer could reduce reliance on imported components and help bring down vehicle prices.

Financial support and easier financing arrangements are also expected to play a role in encouraging consumers to adopt electric transport.

The proposed subsidies and charging network are part of Pakistan’s broader efforts to promote cleaner transport and reduce dependence on imported fuel.

Their impact will depend on how quickly the plans are implemented, whether charging infrastructure becomes widely available and whether electric vehicles become affordable for ordinary consumers.

The government has yet to provide further details in the information presented on the proposed subsidy scheme’s launch date, eligibility criteria or application process.
