Sri Lanka’s T20 World Cup journey has taken a tragic turn following the ruling out of fast bowler Matheesha Pathirana from the ongoing T20 World Cup.
The injury occurred in the match between the side and Australia in Kandy where the pacer had to face issues after feeling discomfort in his leg.
Medical Findings Recovery Time
Scans conducted after the game showed a strain on his calf. Medical staff indicated that the nature of the injury could mean that he could need several weeks of rest and rehabilitation before being match fit again.
With the tournament schedule running fast, there was not much time to wait for his recovery.
Management Opts for Caution
Team officials gave a reason for withdrawing Pathirana saying it was considering his long-term fitness.
Rather than rushing him back and risk causing further damage, the management thought that it would be wiser to let him have the time needed to fully recuperate.
Madhushanka Called Up
To fill the gap, 25-year fast bowler Dilshan Madhushanka is added to the squad. He has limited overs cricket experience with Sri Lanka and is known for his ability to take it away with the new ball. “They hope he will help in keeping the bowling attack in balance.”
Super 8 Stage Ahead
Sri Lanka will next face Zimbabwe with both teams already through to the Super 8 stage. As the competition enters a decisive phase, the question is now about the continuation of the momentum in spite of the setback by the injury.
