The ICC T20 World Cup Super 8 stage saw Pakistan and New Zealand’s crucial Group 2 clash washed out due to persistent heavy rain on Saturday. This has added further uncertainty to the group standings.
The match was scheduled to be played in Colombo, Sri Lanka. It was set to feature Pakistan, New Zealand, England, and Sri Lanka in Group 2.
Pakistan’s captain won the toss and elected to bat first, but continuous rain prevented the game from starting. The umpires ultimately called off the match.
As per tournament rules, both teams were awarded one point each.
This outcome means Pakistan’s progression to the semi-finals now depends heavily on the results of their remaining group matches.
Pakistan’s next key match is against England on February 24, followed by their final group encounter against Sri Lanka.
If Pakistan wins both matches, they will finish with five points. It will increase their chances of reaching the semi finals.
But in the case of Pakistan winning one match and losing the other, the teams fate might depend on other teams’ results and net run rate.
Losing both remaining matches would leave Pakistan with just one point. It will result in elimination from the tournament.
After the rain affected match every remaining game in the group has become very important. This also leaves little room for error.
The upcoming match between Sri Lanka and England on February 22 will also play an important role in making the final group standings.
