Afghan Religious Conclave: Taliban vows not to use Afghan soil for Terrorism

KABUL: Afghan soil will not be used against any country for Terrorism, says the Afghan Taliban, after they passed a critical resolution in a massive religious conclave at Kabul.

Over one thousand Taliban-affiliated religious scholars were present at the gathering. The Religious Scholars represented all 34 provinces of Afghanistan.

It was decided that Afghan soil will not be used against any country. Moreover, travelling overseas for jihad is also prohibited for citizens.

Pakistan strongly supported this major statement. The decision directly reflects Islamabad’s key security demand.

That demand includes preventing the use of Afghan territory for terrorism.

Therefore, the statement appears to acknowledge Pakistan’s long-held stance. This promise provides a possible religious way out for the Taliban.

It provides them with the face-saving they require in a change of policy.

Implementation of Decision: A Major Challenge

The principled and consistent position of Pakistan seems to have led to this conclave. This resolution is a full justification of such a diplomatic stance.

But now the actual question is how to implement. These are not the first promises of that sort, which are hardly kept.

The possibilities of this policy are high. Assuming the Taliban achieves its intention, it would be a long-term stability to the unstable border.

It may also be beneficial in achieving enormous economic potential. However, in the end, the Taliban regime needs to now prove their commitment. They must be able to develop verifiable mechanisms on the ground.

The methods must effectively end terrorism across borders.
