Low flooding continues at Tarbela and Kalabagh along the Indus River. However, water levels in most other major rivers of Punjab remain normal, according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
A PDMA spokesperson said the Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi and Sutlej rivers are currently flowing within normal limits. Water conditions in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan, Nullah Palkhu and several other streams are also reported to be normal.
However, the situation is different at Nullah Deg. Low-level flooding has been reported there, with the water discharge recorded at 15,500 cusecs.
Tarbela Dam reaches full capacity
According to PDMA, water flow at Kalabagh has reached 321,000 cusecs. Meanwhile, the flow recorded at Tarbela stands at 250,000 cusecs.
The authority also reported that Tarbela Dam has reached 100 per cent of its storage capacity. Mangla Dam, another major water reservoir in the country, is currently at 77 per cent of its storage capacity.
PDMA issues safety advice
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa has asked the public to remain careful because weather and river conditions can change.
He particularly advised people to avoid recreational activities near rivers, canals and streams. People living or travelling close to waterways should also follow official warnings and safety instructions.
The PDMA chief warned that children should not be allowed to swim or bathe in rivers, streams, canals or other waterways while flood risks remain.
PDMA continues to monitor water levels across the province. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and keep track of official flood and weather updates.
On the other hand, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) issued a flood alert for Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir due to the risk of glacial lake outbursts.
When is heavy rain expected in Pakistan?
The NDMA has also issued an alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms in the Potohar region and upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Murree, Galiyat and nearby areas may receive heavy rain from September 2 to 5.
Heavy rain is also expected in Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan and Peshawar.
