United States (US) President Donald Trump has put forward an extensive $1.5 trillion defense budget request for the fiscal year 2027, representing the most significant year-over-year increase in military expenditure since the conclusion of World War II.
This proposal, revealed by the United States Department of Defense, includes major investments in ships, aircraft, missile defense systems, and advanced technologies aimed at enhancing America’s military capabilities.
A prominent aspect of the budget is the introduction of a new category termed “presidential priorities,” which emphasises initiatives such as the Golden Dome missile defense system, dominance in drone warfare, artificial intelligence programs, and the enhancement of military data infrastructure.
Officials at the Pentagon assert that these projects are intended to modernise defense capabilities and guarantee that the United States retains technological superiority in future conflicts.
In addition, naval expansion is a crucial element of the proposal, with over $65 billion earmarked for the acquisition of 18 warships and 16 support vessels under the “Golden Fleet” initiative.
These vessels will be constructed by General Dynamics and Huntington Ingalls Industries, marking the largest request for US shipbuilding since 1962 and highlighting Washington’s increasing emphasis on maritime strength.
Furthermore, the defense budget request proposed by Trump enhances aircraft procurement, raising the annual acquisition of Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets to 85 units while allocating $102 billion for aircraft programs and research.
Additionally, $6.1 billion has been requested for the Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider stealth bomber, while development efforts continue for the next-generation Boeing F-47 fighter jet.
Trump’s new budget request includes military expansion
The budget outlines multi-year procurement contracts for additional munitions programs, asserting that extended contracts provide both large defense companies and their small to medium-sized suppliers with the necessary stability to enhance production.
The proposal by Trump includes a salary increase that favors junior enlisted personnel, who will receive a 7% raise, while their superiors will see a 6% increase, and the highest ranks will receive a 5% raise.
Additionally, the budget suggests an expansion of the military by 44,000 new service members in fiscal year 2027, following the recruitment of over 20,000 in fiscal year 2026.
Importantly, the budget does not allocate funds for the ongoing conflict with Iran.
A senior official from the Pentagon indicated that due to the timing of the appropriations process, a supplemental budget request will likely be necessary to cover immediate operational expenses and replenishment requirements resulting from the conflict.
The Pentagon’s total budget of $1.5 trillion is divided into a $1.15 trillion funding request and a $350 billion supplemental budget request, necessitating the approval of a reconciliation bill similar to the one used last year.
