Trump faces growing public dissatisfaction before midterms

As the US midterm elections draw closer, US President Donald Trump’s difficulties are increasing.

A fresh Reuters/Ipsos poll has raised concerns within the White House, revealing that public dissatisfaction with Trump’s performance has reached the highest level of both his presidential terms.

Historic decline in popularity

According to media reports, the survey figures show that 66 per cent of Americans have completely rejected Trump’s presidential performance, while only 31 per cent have expressed confidence in him.

This strong reaction from voters appears to be directly benefiting the Democratic Party, which enjoys 47 per cent public support ahead of the upcoming elections, while the Republicans appear to be limited to just 35 per cent.

Economic inequality and tensions with Iran

The biggest challenge for the Trump administration has proved to be the loss of public confidence in the economy. In the survey, 68 per cent of citizens expressed disappointment with his economic policies, while 40 per cent said they trusted the Democrats more than the Republicans to deal with the economic crisis.

The soaring prices of petroleum products following the US military attack on Iran have further added fuel to the fire amid this economic deterioration. The fuel crisis has directly affected the pockets of ordinary citizens, with the resulting backlash indirectly affecting the popularity of Trump and his party.

A warning bell for Republicans

Just weeks before the midterm elections, the sharp decline in Trump’s popularity has put the Republican Party’s hold on the legislative chambers at risk. If this public discontent persists until election day, control of both chambers of Congress could pass into the hands of the Democrats, potentially leaving the remainder of Trump’s presidential term facing severe political constraints.
