US President Donald Trump will be attending the FIFA World Cup 2026 final and handing out the trophy to the victor, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has said.
The final of FIFA World Cup 2026 will be held on July 19 in the New Jersey-based MetLife Stadium.
Trump has yet to visit any of the games of the tournament, but FIFA’s president has confirmed the American president will be in attendance for the highlight of the tournament.
In an interview, Infantino said he and Trump would enjoy the last match together and be present for the trophy presentation ceremony following the match.
The confirmation of Trump’s high-profile attendance at the major sporting event has generated a lot of interest.
The World Cup, which starts on June 11, is jointly being played in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
During the tournament, a total of 104 matches will be held, 78 of which will take place in the United States.
President Trump has yet to attend any games due to his busy schedule, said Andrew Giuliani, Executive Director of the White House World Cup Task Force.
He said Trump has a strong interest in the big sporting event, so he’ll likely show up at the end.
Trump made headlines last year when he handed out the trophy at the Club World Cup’s trophy presentation ceremony.
Following the handing out of the trophy, he stayed on the stage with the players and it caught off guard some players on the winning team.
People on social media also thoroughly discussed this.
Trump’s presence at the World Cup final is most likely to put him in the international spotlight again, as this is one of the most-watched sports events in the world.
