The British government has announced plans to introduce new legal routes for refugees by the end of this year, according to reports on Saturday. The new system is expected to give people who are fleeing war and persecution a safe and legal way to enter the United Kingdom.
UK refugee sponsorship
According to the UK Home Office, the new plan is based on Canada’s community sponsorship model. Under this system, approved organisations, universities, community groups, and employers will be able to support eligible refugees who want to move to the UK.
The government said that the new scheme will become an important part of the country’s refugee resettlement system. It is also expected to accept more refugees than the current UK Resettlement Scheme.
University sponsorship
Applications for the university sponsorship route are expected to open later this year.
The first refugees under this route are likely to arrive in 2027. The government also plans to introduce an employment sponsorship route next year.
UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood said the changes are meant to protect people who genuinely need refuge while improving the country’s asylum system.
She said that the UK has a long history of helping people escaping war and persecution. She added that the system must remain fair and prevent misuse.
The new refugee routes will work alongside stricter immigration rules. The government has also announced changes to human rights and modern slavery laws. It says these steps will help reduce false asylum claims.
Under the proposed rules, some people with criminal records or those who use fake documents may lose protection under modern slavery laws.
Officials said the new refugee routes will have limited places. Every applicant will go through detailed security and eligibility checks.
The government said the plan is part of its wider effort to provide safer migration options and reduce illegal journeys, including dangerous crossings through the English Channel.
