Veteran sports journalist, former cricketer Qamar Ahmed passes away

Pakistan’s senior sports journalist, commentator and former first-class cricketer, Qamar Ahmed, passed away in Karachi at the age of 88. According to his family, he had suffered a heart attack two weeks earlier.

Qamar Ahmed was one of Pakistan’s most distinguished cricket journalists. He not only closely followed the game throughout his career but also helped preserve its rich history through his insightful reporting and documentation.

During his long and illustrious journalistic career, he covered more than 450 Test matches around the world and witnessed many of cricket’s most memorable moments.

Born on October 23, 1937, in Uttar Pradesh, India, he later became one of the pioneers of cricket journalism in Pakistan.

Before entering journalism, Ahmed enjoyed a cricketing career of his own, playing 17 first-class matches for Hyderabad Division as a left-arm spinner. He later transitioned into sports journalism, where he quickly established himself as one of Pakistan’s leading cricket writers.

Known for his distinctive writing style and deep analytical insight, Qamar Ahmed earned immense respect in both cricketing and media circles. His work was highly regarded not only in Pakistan but also internationally.
