Water terrorism: India releases water in River Chenab

ISLAMABAD: India continued its “water terrorism” by once again releasing water into the River Chenab. The water flow on Monday reached a dangerous level of 63,000 cusecs.

Meanwhile, officials claim that India intentionally opened the Baglihar Dam gates. And evacuated water to damage Pakistan’s wheat crop.

According to them, India is now filling its dams, which may drop the flow of the Chenab to zero. They have been termed as water terrorism in an effort to eliminate wheat production.

In May this year, India unilaterally abrogated the Indus-Waters Treaty (IWT). This is a 1960 water-sharing agreement mediated by the World Bank.

The allocation of three of the eastern rivers to India and three of the western rivers to Pakistan.

The three eastern rivers allocated to India, which have a total mean annual flow of 33-million-acre ft, are the River Beas, the River Ravi, and the River Sutlej.

The three western rivers assigned to Pakistan, which have a total mean annual flow of 135-million-acre ft, are the River Indus, the River Chenab, and the River Jhelum.

Report by National Assembly

An annual per capita water availability has declined in Pakistan, according to a report brought to the National Assembly by the Ministry of Water Resources on Monday.

Another consequence of the population growth in Pakistan is that the population has grown by 40 million people between 2017 and 2023.

This leads to a reduction in the water availability of 154 cubic meters per capita.

It is estimated that the population of Pakistan will be 288 million by 2030.

And the amount of water per capita is bound to decrease to 795 cubic meters per year with the continuous increase in population.

The available per capita water is reduced to 679 cubic meters in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa. 760 cubic meters in Punjab, 1,169 cubic meters in Sindh, and 928 cubic meters in Balochistan.
