The Sindh government has announced a major reduction in the official wheat release price, cutting it by Rs500 per 40 kilograms.

The provincial cabinet approved the reduction during a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in Karachi.

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced the decision at a press conference. He said the government wanted to make flour more affordable for consumers across the province.

New wheat prices announced

The government has reduced the wheat release price from Rs5,000 to Rs4,500 per 40 kilograms. This means the official wheat price has dropped from Rs125 to Rs112.50 per kilogram, a reduction of Rs12.50 per kilogram.

According to Memon, the decision is expected to lower flour prices by Rs17 per kilogram, making flour more affordable for the public.

The government has directed flour mills to pass the benefits of cheaper wheat on to consumers instead of keeping the savings themselves.

The price adjustment follows a recent decline in market wheat prices. It also brings Sindh’s official wheat release price closer to those in other provinces.

According to the Sindh Food Department, the provincial government has approximately 8.72 million bags of wheat in stock.

These stocks include around 1.93 million bags from previous supplies, 1.56 million bags purchased during 2026, 2.23 million bags obtained from PASSCO and three million bags of imported wheat.

These reserves will help the government maintain wheat supplies to flour mills and traditional grinding units.

The revised pricing policy aims to make flour more affordable and reduce the financial burden on households.

However, the actual reduction in retail flour prices will depend on how quickly flour mills and retailers apply the new rates.
