Lieutenant General Aamer Raza, the Chief of General Staff at General Headquarters, has been elevated to the rank of four-star general on Friday, reflecting the Pakistan Armed Forces’ tradition of promoting officers on the basis of merit, professional competence and suitability for senior responsibilities.
Gen Raza has had a distinguished military career, serving in key command, staff and institutional appointments across the Pakistan Army. As Chief of General Staff, he headed the General Staff Branch at GHQ, a pivotal position requiring strategic vision, operational expertise and a comprehensive understanding of national security and military affairs.
His experience in technical and defence-production roles is also considered significant for his next assignment. Gen Raza previously served as Director General Weapons and Equipment and as Chairman of Heavy Industries Taxila, where he gained extensive knowledge of military technology, weapons systems and defence-industrial capabilities.
These appointments provided him with a strong technical foundation for responsibilities associated with the Commander of the National Strategic Command, a position expected to play a central role in matters related to Pakistan’s strategic domain.
An officer of the Armoured Corps, Gen Raza has held a wide range of command and staff positions during his career. His professional background combines operational experience with institutional leadership and technical expertise, making him well suited to oversee a strategically important headquarters.
His promotion and appointment are being viewed as a continuation of the Armed Forces’ emphasis on selecting senior officers on the basis of experience, competence and professional merit. The new headquarters is expected to serve as a key coordinating centre for matters related to national strategic capabilities.
