Yemen will observe the 64th anniversary of the September 26 Revolution this year, with the anniversary falling on Saturday, September 26, 2026. Revolution Day is an official public holiday in Yemen.
However, because September 26 falls on Yemen’s weekly day of rest this year, the Ministry of Civil Service and Insurance has announced Sunday, September 27, as a compensatory public holiday for employees of central and local government authorities.
According to the ministry, government offices will resume normal working hours on Monday, September 28. The decision is based on Yemen’s law governing official holidays and a cabinet resolution providing a substitute day when an official holiday coincides with the weekly day of rest.
The September 26 Revolution refers to the 1962 uprising that ended the Mutawakkilite Kingdom of Yemen and led to the establishment of the Yemen Arab Republic. The revolution began in Sana’a on September 26, 1962, and was followed by years of conflict between republican and royalist forces.
The anniversary remains politically sensitive in Yemen. Human Rights Watch has reported that Houthi authorities have detained people in previous years for publicly commemorating the September 26 Revolution, as the group promotes September 21—the date it seized Sana’a in 2014—as an important anniversary.
