LAHORE: Justice Shams Mahmood Mirza of the Lahore High Court has stepped down, becoming the first judge of the LHC to resign after the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
He sent his resignation to President Asif Ali Zardari and cleared his chamber soon after, indicating an immediate departure.
Justice Mirza was expected to be transferred under the new amendment, which may have influenced his decision. He was due to retire in 2028.
A reference against him has been pending in the Supreme Judicial Council since January. This, along with the expected transfer, created pressure leading up to his exit.
Earlier, on November 13, Supreme Court judges Mansoor Ali Shah and Athar Minallah also resigned, adding to the judicial shake-up after the passage of the 27th amendment.
Law and Justice Commission member and former attorney Makhdoom Ali Khan has also resigned.
