Trump laughs off journalist’s “fascist” question to Mamdani

WASHINGTON: United States President Donald Trump and New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani have held talks in the White House, expressing their hope for a productive and cordial relationship despite their history of mutual criticism.

During the meeting, the president and Mamdani discussed matters of mutual interest.

After the meeting, a reporter asked Mamdani, “Do you think President Trump is a fascist?”

Before Mamdani could respond, Trump jumped in and said he didn’t mind being called a fascist. He told Mamdani, “You can say fascist. It’s easier to say than to explain, and I don’t have any issue with it.”

Later, while speaking to the media, President Trump said his meeting with Mamdani was good and productive.

Trump commended Mamdani,  the Muslim politician he had previously labeled a “jihadist” and even threatened to strip of citizenship for his decisive election victory and his focus on cost-of-living concerns.

“We just had a terrific, very productive meeting. We share one important goal: we want our beloved city to thrive,” said Trump, noting that Zohran ran an “incredible campaign” and “easily” defeated his opponents.

Mamdani, in turn, said he appreciated the opportunity to speak with the president. “As he mentioned, it was a productive conversation centered on our mutual admiration and love for New York City,” he said, adding that they discussed issues such as rent, utility costs, and grocery prices.

When questioned about their disagreements particularly on matters like immigration enforcement  Mamdani said he hoped they could still collaborate on shared priorities despite their differences.
