Following the implementation of new net billing regulations in Pakistan, many consumers have started adopting an alternative approach by storing excess solar power in batteries instead of selling it to the national grid, creating a new challenge for the government.
According to the Pakistan Batteries Import Market Report, batteries with a combined storage capacity of 6.004 gigawatts (GW) have been imported since January 2024. The highest monthly imports were recorded in April 2026, when batteries with a capacity of 652.2 megawatts (MW) entered the country.
The report states that Pakistani consumers invested Rs126 billion in battery storage during the month. Pakistan’s total electricity generation capacity, excluding solar power, stands at 39,000 MW, while transmission and distribution losses account for up to 18% of the country’s total generation capacity.
In response to the growing demand for battery storage, the government has begun preparing a National Battery Framework. Compared to other countries in the region, Pakistan is witnessing a faster rise in the adoption of solar energy and battery storage systems.
Globally, energy storage capacity is expected to reach 1.5 million MW by 2030, while worldwide investment in battery storage is projected to total $1.2 trillion between 2024 and 2035.
The sharp decline in the cost of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries has also made battery storage more affordable. The average battery pack price dropped from $151 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) in 2022 to $70 per kWh in 2025.
