Police have issued notices to seven professors of the Federal Urdu University in Karachi (FUUAST) on Monday. These notices have been issued in connection with an attack on the university’s security in-charge at the Gulshan campus.
According to police, the professors have been asked to record their statements about the incident. The notices were issued under Section 160 of the Pakistan Penal Code.
Police said none of the professors has been named as suspects in the case. They have only been asked to join the investigation and provide their statements.
University teachers protest
Meanwhile, university teachers have protested against the notices issued to the seven professors.
The protesting teachers said that the seven professors are office-bearers of the teachers’ associations of both campuses.
They said that the professors have been leading a months-long campaign over salaries, house ceiling allowances and pensions.
The teachers accused authorities of trying to target professors who have been raising their voices for their rights.
They further said that their struggle for pending salaries, house ceiling allowances and pensions will continue.
FUUAST campus officer shot
The security in-charge of FUUAST was shot and injured in what police believe was a targeted attack on July 16.
Aziz Bhatti SHO Anser Ahmed reportedly said that the university official, Adnan Akhtar, was riding a motorcycle from his home. This is when armed men on another motorcycle stopped him near Aziz Bhatti Park and opened fire.
Akhtar suffered several bullet wounds in the attack. He was taken to Aga Khan University Hospital for treatment.
Police at that time also informed that his condition was out of danger. The police said the attack appeared to be linked to a personal dispute.
Young doctor shot dead in Karachi
Recently, in another tragic incident, a young doctor was shot dead during a bank robbery in Karachi.
Police said Dr Akash was caught in an exchange of fire between suspected robbers and a bank security guard near Teen Talwar.
According to SSP South Mahzoor Ali, Dr Akash had withdrawn cash from a bank and was travelling with his father and cousin to another bank when the incident took place.
Police said the family’s vehicle stopped outside the bank when armed suspects approached from behind.
The security guard reportedly mistook the people in the vehicle for robbers and opened fire. The suspects then returned fire. Dr Akash was hit during the shooting and died in the incident.
