A young doctor named Akash was shot dead during a bank robbery in Karachi.
Doctor Akash was caught in an exchange of gunfire between suspected robbers and a bank security guard near Teen Talwar in Karachi on Monday, police said.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) South Mahzoor Ali said the victim, identified as Dr Akash, had withdrawn cash from a bank and was travelling with his father and cousin to another bank when the incident occurred.
According to the police, the family’s vehicle stopped outside the bank when armed suspects approached from behind. Believing the occupants to be robbers, the bank’s security guard opened fire, prompting the suspects to return fire.
SSP Ali said the vehicle was carrying two packets containing Rs2.5 million each. The attackers escaped after snatching one packet containing Rs2.5 million.
Police have launched an investigation to determine whether the fatal bullet that killed Dr Akash was fired by the security guard or one of the suspects.
His body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.
The victim’s family demanded the immediate arrest of those responsible, warning that they would stage a sit-in with the body if the suspects were not apprehended.
“My nephew was killed in the firing outside the bank,” Dr Akash’s uncle, Khem Chand, told reporters.
According to the family, the 28-year-old doctor had been serving at Jinnah Hospital for the past two years.
Police said efforts were under way to identify and arrest the suspects, while the investigation into the shooting continues.
