National Guard Troops Shot Near White House
Previously, Washington’s Farragut Square turned chaotic after two National Guard troops were shot, the Guardian reports.
Some residents blamed former President Trump’s heavy militarisation of the capital for creating a tense environment, according to the Guardian.
The normally quiet area, filled with offices, coffee shops, and lunch spots, resembled a major crime scene as news of the shooting spread.
Authorities later identified the suspect as an Afghan man.
Following the incident outside Farragut North metro station, National Guard squads, police officers, and heavily armed Secret Service personnel rushed to the scene and cordoned off nearby streets.
Office workers in the area were told to use back entrances and avoid the square.
According to the Guardian’s Washington bureau, the scene was filled with flashing lights, emergency vehicles, and a helicopter overhead, while law enforcement searched the area for evidence and ensured safety.
