British teenage cyclist Finlay Tarling has died after a serious incident during the Volta a Portugal race, organisers confirmed.
The 19-year-old Welsh cyclist was competing in the race on Friday when he was struck by a car that entered the road, according to local media reports.
Tarling, a specialist in time trials, joined the NSN Development Team last year. The team described him as a much-loved member and said his death had left them “heartbroken,” adding that he would be deeply missed by his family, teammates and friends.
Portuguese President António José Seguro also expressed his condolences, saying Tarling’s death had plunged the cycling community, the race and Portugal into mourning.
The eighth stage of the Volta a Portugal was halted following the incident as a mark of respect. Organisers said the race would be neutralised until reaching Fafe and that the scheduled podium ceremony would not take place.
Portugal’s RTP broadcaster reported that Tarling was hit by a non-race car travelling in the opposite direction. Further details about the circumstances of the incident were not immediately available.
Tarling was the brother of fellow cyclist Josh Tarling, who competes for UCI WorldTeam INEOS Grenadiers.
Earlier, a 28-year-old Pakistani biker and TikToker, Komal Jan, died after drowning in the Soan River near DHA Phase-I in Rawalpindi, police said.
According to police, an emergency call was received reporting that a woman had fallen into the river near a bridge. Four Rescue 1122 emergency vehicles reached the site, and rescue teams launched a search operation to locate the missing woman.
After several hours of searching, rescuers recovered the woman’s body from the river. Police later identified her as Komal Jan.
Police said Komal’s motorcycle was found parked near the river, with her handbag, helmet and one of her mobile phones placed on it.
Sources said Komal was an employee of the Election Commission of Pakistan and was passionate about heavy-bike riding. She also regularly created and uploaded videos on social media.
