The Punjab Assembly has passed a resolution calling for a legal ban on social media accounts for children under the age of 16.
The resolution was presented in the House by Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Sarah Ahmed.
It stated that protecting children’s physical, mental, psychological and moral development is the responsibility of the state.
What does the petition say?
The resolution also highlighted growing concerns over the misuse of social media. It stated that children are increasingly exposed to risks. These include things like cyberbullying and online sexual exploitation.
According to the resolution, social media is also exposing children to inappropriate content, psychological stress and other serious risks.
The resolution recommended that the federal government introduce legislation to prohibit children under 16 from having social media accounts.
It noted that countries including Australia, France, China and the United States have introduced laws or regulations aimed at restricting or regulating social media use among minors.
The resolution said that, in view of international trends, legislation was necessary in Pakistan to make sure of a safer future for children.
How will the age be verified?
It also called on the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to establish an effective age-verification system across social media platforms.
The resolution further recommended that social media companies be required to promptly prevent harmful content and ensure a safer digital environment for children.
It also called for federal and provincial institutions to launch digital awareness campaigns for parents, teachers and children. These would focus on safe and responsible internet use.
The resolution also stressed the need for a coordinated system among federal and provincial institutions. Additionally for effective legislation to strengthen the protection of children online.
