The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved a plan on Wednesday to provide free electric scooters to female students and working women.
A meeting was held under the chairmanship of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi.
During the meeting, he directed officials to take immediate steps to provide the scooters.
How will the scooters be given?
Officials briefed the chief minister that the scheme will start in Peshawar.
Female students and working women in the city will receive the electric scooters in the first phase.
The project will later be expanded to other districts of the province.
Focus on safe travel and women’s independence
Chief Minister Sohail Afridi said the electric scooters will help women travel safely and easily to educational institutions and workplaces.
He said the project will also help reduce air pollution as electric scooters are a cleaner form of transport.
Sohail Afridi added that the scheme will support women’s economic independence. He said the government wants to make travel to education and employment easier and safer for women.
Sindh women get free pink EVs
Previously, the Sindh government had distributed free pink electric scooters to women under its Pink EV Scooter Scheme.
After that, it was announced that women in Hyderabad will also receive scooters under the programme, according to reports.
Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon said the scheme has become an important step towards empowering women.
He said 1,000 scooters were distributed across the province within a year. According to him, the scheme has brought a positive change to society.
Memon said women in Hyderabad will now be included in the scooter distribution programme.
He also said the government had recently opened Shahrah-e-Bhutto for public traffic. He added that the free scooter scheme was another positive development for women.
When asked about the 28th Constitutional Amendment, Memon said the federal government had not yet contacted the Sindh government. He said the party would decide its position after receiving the draft.
