Several major artificial intelligence services, including ChatGPT, Claude and Grok, have experienced technical problem at the same time.
According to outage-monitoring website Downdetector, a large number of users reported problems with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude and xAI’s Grok.
The simultaneous disruption of several major AI services is unusual, as technical problems affecting different platforms normally occur independently.
Google’s AI service Gemini was also reported to have experienced difficulties for some users, although Google did not formally confirm a widespread outage.
Information from Claude service-status system indicated that the performance of some of its newer models had been affected.
Anthropic later said that services for other models had returned to normal levels.
OpenAI’s system-status page also reported higher-than-usual error rates affecting ChatGPT and Codex. The company warned that some users could continue to experience problems while using its services.
xAI confirmed technical problems affecting Grok and said its engineers were investigating the cause and working to resolve the issue.
The disruption has also drawn attention to problems reported with Microsoft’s Azure cloud-computing service.
Azure is one of the world’s major cloud infrastructure providers and supplies computing and other online services to businesses and technology companies.
This has led to speculation that problems affecting cloud infrastructure could have contributed to disruptions across several AI platforms.
However, there is currently no evidence that Azure was the single cause of all the reported AI outages. Each company also operates its own systems and infrastructure.
Modern AI platforms rely on complex networks of servers, data centres, storage systems, communications networks and cloud-computing services.
A failure affecting an important part of this infrastructure can result in large numbers of users being affected at the same time.
Services such as ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini are now widely used for education, research, business, programming, writing and everyday tasks.
