Weather authorities have warned of heavy rain and possible urban flooding in several parts of Pakistan as another strong spell of monsoon weather affects the country.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s Flood Forecasting Division (FFD), widespread rain, thunderstorms and strong winds are expected over the upper parts of the country. Heavy rainfall may also occur during the next 24 to 36 hours.
Punjab cities face urban flooding risk
Heavy rain is expected in several districts of Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Jhelum, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Sialkot and Narowal. Islamabad is also at risk of urban flooding during the current spell.
The FFD expects moderate increases in the Indus, Jhelum, Chenab and Ravi rivers.
Flash flooding is also possible in streams across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and tributaries of the Kabul River.
Dams reaches maximum level
Tarbela Dam has reached its maximum conservation level, while Mangla Dam reached around 78 per cent.
The Indus River at Kalabagh and Chashma is currently at low flood level.
Additionally, Taunsa, Nowshera, Mangla, Marala, Khanki, Shahdara and Sidhnai could reach low-flood levels during the coming period.
Rain expected in northern regions
Rain and thunderstorms are also forecast across upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan. Peshawar, Swat, Nowshera, Mardan and other northern districts may recieve heavy rainfall.
In Azad Kashmir, areas including Bagh, Muzaffarabad, Haveli, Bhimber, Sudhnoti, Mirpur and Kotli could also experience difficult weather conditions.
The FFD says monsoon activity is decrease from September 6.
Authorities have advised people living in vulnerable areas and close to rivers to remain careful. Residents to avoid unnecessary travel.
