Netflix Raises Prices

Netflix has increased its subscription prices in Germany and Austria. The change comes after more than two years without a price adjustment. The company last raised prices in both markets in April 2024.

The latest move affects Netflix customers across several subscription plans. In Germany, the ad-supported plan now costs €6.99 per month. It previously cost €4.99. The Standard plan has also increased from €13.99 to €15.99.

The Premium plan now costs €21.99 per month. Its previous monthly price was €19.99. The Premium option includes 4K picture quality and 3D audio. The latest increase adds €2 to the monthly cost.

Austria is also seeing higher Netflix subscription costs. The Basic plan has increased from €8.99 to €10.99 per month. The Standard plan now costs €15.99 instead of €13.99. Premium has also increased to €21.99 from €19.99.

Netflix has not introduced its ad-supported plan in Austria yet. The company plans to launch that cheaper option next year. For now, Austrian customers have fewer pricing choices than German subscribers.

Extra member fees are also increasing in Germany. Users outside the main household must pay additional charges. The ad-supported option rises from €3.99 to €4.99. Other plans increase the fee from €4.99 to €5.99.

Netflix is also ending the older ad-free Basic plan for remaining customers. Those users will need to move to another available option. This could push some subscribers toward higher-priced plans.

Why Netflix Is Raising Prices

Netflix says higher prices help support its growing entertainment offering. The company regularly points to increased investment in content. Its expanding catalog requires significant spending on films and television programs.

The company has also raised prices in other major markets. Netflix continues to rely on pricing changes to increase revenue. Strong subscriber demand has allowed the company to make similar moves previously.

Analysts expect the latest increases to lift Netflix’s average revenue per user. Citi estimates a 24% increase in German average revenue per user. It also expects a 15% rise in Austria.

Netflix Raises Prices in Germany and Austria at a time of continued business expansion. The higher fees could increase revenue if customers remain subscribed. However, some users may reconsider their plans because of the higher monthly costs.

Existing subscribers may also face additional requirements before the new prices apply. Consumer protection rules in Germany and Austria require notice and affirmative consent. This could make the rollout slower for some existing customers.

The price changes give Netflix another way to strengthen revenue from its European customer base. They also show the company’s continued focus on monetizing its large subscriber base. For customers, the main change is straightforward. Netflix subscriptions now cost more in both Germany and Austria.
