FBR makes changes to 2026 income tax return form

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has made major changes to the income tax return form for tax year 2026.

The changes were made only a few weeks before the legal deadline for filing tax returns.

According to the FBR, the changes were introduced through SRO 1495(I)/2026. The notification has made changes to the Income Tax Rules 2002.

What changes were made to the tax return form?

Under the changes, new sections have been added to different parts of the Second Schedule. These include Part-II-ZE, Part-II-ZF, Part-II-ZG and Part-II-ZH.

The FBR said the changes will apply to the income tax return system for tax year 2026.

When is the income tax return filing deadline?

The legal deadline for filing income tax returns is September 30, 2026.

Tax experts have raised concerns about the timing of the changes. They said many taxpayers and tax professionals may already be preparing their returns using the previous format.

Last minute changes

They warned that the last-minute changes could create legal and technical problems.

Tax experts have asked the FBR to clearly explain the new changes and how they will be applied.

They said clear instructions are needed so taxpayers can file their returns on time without facing problems.

FBR announces gift scheme for traders

According to FBR sources, traders who submit their income tax returns by September 30 will receive special benefits.

Under the new scheme, traders will have to display an FBR registration plate outside their shops. The plate will cost Rs25,000.

However, traders who file their returns by September 30 will receive the plate free of cost. The registration fee for these traders will also be waived.

The FBR is also considering other gifts and incentives for people who file their tax returns on time.
