Field Marshal Asim Munir notified as CDF

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Defence on Friday officially notified Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF).

The move came a day after President Asif Ali Zardari approved the appointment on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recommendation.

“President Zardari approved Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as COAS and concurrently as CDF for five years,” said a statement from the President House on Thursday.

Field Marshal Munir, who was promoted earlier this year to the rank of field marshal will continue to serve as Chief of Army Staff for five years.

His elevation followed Pakistan’s decisive victory over India in the May conflict.

Separately, the Defence Ministry also announced a two-year extension for Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmad Babar Sidhu, Chief of the Pakistan Air Force, effective after his current term ends in March 2026.

The new military title comes after President Zardari approved the Pakistan Army, Air Force, and Navy (Amendment) Bills 2025 on November 15, following parliamentary approval.

The amendments extend the powers and responsibilities outlined in Article 243, originally for a Field Marshal, to any General promoted to that rank.
