Pakistan’s Foreign Office has clarified that there is no blanket ban on Afghan students in the country, saying those holding valid visas and enrolled in recognised university programmes can continue their studies.
FO clarifies position on Afghan students
During the weekly briefing in Islamabad on Thursday, the Foreign Office spokesperson was asked about reports concerning the expulsion of Afghan students studying at medical colleges in Pakistan.
The spokesperson said that Afghan students enrolled in degree programmes and holding valid visas can remain in Pakistan and continue their education.
However, the spokesperson clarified that Afghan students who are not registered with any university or do not hold valid visas fall under the government’s directives concerning their stay in Pakistan.
PMDC notifications raise concerns
The clarification comes after notifications were reportedly issued by several medical colleges concerning Afghan students studying in Pakistan.
The notifications, citing directions from the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC), asked certain Afghan students to leave the country.
The Foreign Office spokesperson said visas are issued for specific purposes, and individuals are permitted to engage only in the activities for which their visas were granted.
FO asks PMDC to verify students’ status
The spokesperson said that since the notifications were issued by the PMDC, questions should be directed to the council regarding whether the affected students hold valid visas and are properly registered in valid university programmes.
The spokesperson reiterated that Afghan students who meet the visa and university registration requirements can continue their education in Pakistan.
