Karachi may experience water shortages in several parts after a major power breakdown affected operations at the Dhabeji Pumping Station, one of the city’s key water supply facilities.
According to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC), the electricity failure forced 10 of the 21 pumping units at Dhabeji to stop operating. The disruption has reduced the amount of water being supplied to different parts of the city.
Cable fault disrupts pumping operations
A KWSC spokesperson said K-Electric informed the corporation that the power failure was caused by a cable fault.
The breakdown affected electricity supply to the Third Phase, Fourth Phase and K-III pump houses at Dhabeji. 10 pumps became non-operational, raising concerns about reduced water availability in Karachi.
KWSC officials are coordinating with K-Electric to restore electricity. The affected pumping units will be restarted and efforts will be made to bring the water supply back to normal.
Karachi residents asked to conserve water
Authorities have warned that the disruption could lead to water shortages in different areas until pumping operations are fully restored.
Residents have therefore been advised to use water carefully and avoid unnecessary consumption during the disruption.
Dhabeji is a vital part in Karachi’s water distribution system, and interruptions at the pumping station can affect supplies across large sections of the city.
Power failures at Dhabeji have caused similar problems in the past. Earlier outages have also forced several pumps to shut down, reducing the amount of water reaching Karachi and creating difficulties for residents.
However, water availability remains a major issue for many Karachi residents. Some neighbourhoods already experience limited or irregular piped water supplies and depend on alternative sources such as tankers.
